Piping Plover

The piping plover is one of the smallest of the plovers. It is found along the eastern and Caribbean coastlines and it has been on and off the endangered species list for the past few years. This shorebird is known for its stubby orange bill which is tipped in black, its narrow breastband and its pale upperparts and face. It is mounted with a wooden dowel on a piece of Long Island driftwood.  Click on photos to enlarge.  See more shorebirds
